Ankylosing Spondylitis

Understanding Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)

What Is Ankylosing Spondylitis?

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a type of arthritis that mainly affects the spine. It causes pain and stiffness in the lower back and hips, especially in the morning or after sitting for a long time. AS is a chronic (long-lasting) condition that can lead to the bones in the spine fusing together over time, making movement harder.

Common Symptoms:

  • Low back pain and stiffness that improves with activity
  • Pain in the hips, shoulders, or heels
  • Difficulty standing up straight
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Eye inflammation (red, painful eyes)
  • Stiffness worse in the morning or after rest

What Causes AS?

AS is an autoimmune condition, meaning the immune system attacks healthy joints by mistake. The exact cause is unknown, but it is often linked to a gene called HLA-B27.

Who Gets AS?

  • Usually starts between ages 17 and 45
  • More common in men
  • More likely if you have a family history of AS or carry the HLA-B27 gene

How Is AS Diagnosed?

Your doctor may:

  • Ask about your symptoms and medical history
  • Do a physical exam
  • Order X-rays or an MRI of your spine
  • Run blood tests for inflammation and the HLA-827 gene

How Is AS Treated?

There is no cure, but treatment can help reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

Treatment options include:

  • NSAIDs (like ibuprofen or naproxen) for pain and swelling
  • Biologic medications to reduce inflammation
  • Physical therapy to maintain flexibility and posture
  • Regular exercise to stay mobile

Tips for Living with AS:

  • Stay active with stretching and low-impact exercises
  • Practice good posture
  • Use heat or cold packs for relief
  • Get enough sleep and manage stress
  • Don’t smoke

Why Early Treatment Matters:

Starting treatment early can help slow down joint damage and keep you moving comfortably.

Talk to your doctor if you have back pain that doesn’t go away.

Remember: With the right care and lifestyle habits, you can manage AS and stay active!
